How long does it take to reach B2 English?
1 July 2026·5 min
Short answer: B2 is level 4 of 8 on the European scale (CEFR). Starting from zero, an intensive pace gets you there in about 12 months (one level every 3 months); at a general pace, expect 2–3 years. If you already have B1, you're one level away: 3 to 9 months depending on intensity. The variable that speeds things up most isn't talent — it's consistency: regular classes in small groups, real speaking practice and a week-by-week plan. That's why the right first step isn't signing up for any course, but taking a level test — knowing exactly where you start turns "I want B2" into a calendar with dates.
What exactly is B2?
B2 is the first level the professional and academic world takes seriously. It means you understand complex texts, hold conversations with native speakers without excessive strain, and defend your point of view. It's the level universities, many employers and several visa programmes typically ask for.
On our 8-level scale (A1 → C2+), B2 is level 4: professional communication and grammar refinement.
How many levels do I need to climb?
It depends on your starting point:
- From zero (A1): 4 levels.
- From A2: 3 levels.
- From B1: 1 level — you're closer than you think.
The free level test answers this in a few minutes.
Which pace suits me?
At British Fleming School each level takes 3 to 9 months depending on the program:
| Program | Pace | From B1 to B2 |
|---|---|---|
| Intensive | 1 level / 3 months | ~3 months |
| General | 1 level / 9 months | ~9 months |
| 1-year program | 3 levels / year | B2 from A2 in ~1 year |
| 2-year program | 4+ levels | B2 from zero |
Intensive works if you can sustain the weekly rhythm. General fits better if you're working or studying at the same time. Neither is "better" — the best pace is the one you can keep.
What actually speeds up progress?
- Small groups — you speak more times per class and get corrected more.
- Qualified native teachers — your ear trains on real English from day one.
- Consistency over bursts — 3 hours a week for months beats a summer cramming session.
- Practice outside class — series, podcasts and the school's immersion activities.
