IELTS, Cambridge or PTE: which English exam is right for you?
24 June 2026·6 min
Short answer: all three certify your English; they differ in the what for. PTE is 100% computer-based with fast results, and is particularly accepted for UK visas and universities — we're an official Pearson examination centre, so you can prepare and sit the exam in the same place. IELTS is the classic for immigration and universities worldwide, with a human examiner for the speaking test. Cambridge qualifications (B2 First, C1 Advanced) never expire and work brilliantly as a permanent credential on your CV. The right decision comes from two questions: who is asking for it? And how do you perform best — in front of a computer or a person?
What does each exam assess?
All three measure the same four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The format is what changes:
- PTE Academic: entirely computer-based, about 3 hours, with multiple-choice tasks, essay writing and recorded speaking. Automated marking and fast results.
- IELTS: paper or computer; the speaking test is a real interview with an examiner. Academic and General Training versions.
- Cambridge (B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency): one exam per level — you sit the qualification for the level you want to certify. Pass it and it's yours forever.
Which one does your goal require?
| Your goal | First choice | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| UK visa | PTE UK Visa | IELTS |
| International university | PTE Academic or IELTS Academic | Cambridge C1 |
| CV and job market | Cambridge (never expires) | Any current one |
| Urgent result | PTE (fast results) | — |
Golden rule: check the accepted-exams list first — your university's, employer's or visa programme's. That list decides for you.
Which one is "easier"?
None of them is easy; they're different. If speaking to strangers blocks you, PTE's recorded format takes the pressure off. If a computer feels cold, IELTS's human interview lets your real level show. And if structured, level-by-level preparation is your thing, Cambridge is the natural path.
How do we prepare each exam?
At British Fleming School, preparation always includes section-by-section strategies, mock exams with detailed feedback and a clear weekly plan. With PTE you get a practical edge: as an official Pearson centre, you prepare and sit the exam under one roof — same classroom, fewer nerves.
